Pycnogenol-Pro™ was developed in Ireland by Marine Healthfoods. Pycnogenol-Pro™ is a mixture of Pycnogenol pine bark extract with the amino acids, L-arginine and L-citruline, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in a powdered drink formulation.
Pycnogenol-Pro™ is based on 30 years of research by Dr Louis J. Ignarro, Professor of Pharmacology at UCLA, who received the Nobel Prize in 1998 for his work on cardiovascular health. Dr. Ignarro discovered that Nitric Oxide (NO), a molecule produced naturally in the body, is a vasodilator that helps control the flow of blood to every part of our body. He demonstrated how Nitric Oxide regulates blood flow, prevents blood clots and protects against vascular plaque or hardening of the arteries as we know it. Combining his own research with fellow scientists in the UK who had studied the mechanism of this Nitric Oxide production he demonstrated how oral administration of the amino acid L-arginine could boost the body’s production of Nitric Oxide.
Nitric Oxide is produced in the endothelial cells which line the arteries. It keeps the vessels smooth and relaxed. Cholesterol works against this mechanism of relaxation. The cells lining the arteries produce the L-arginine needed for the production of the Nitric Oxide. Oral administration of L-arginine can increase the production of Nitric Oxide dramatically by giving these cells a ready supply of this amino acid. Further research into a compound called L-citruline showed that it can also help increase the production of Nitric Oxide as it works synergistically with L-arginine. This production of Nitric Oxide from L-citruline is slower and therefore prolongs the exposure to nitric oxide when consumed. When Nitric Oxide is produced from the L-arginine and L-citruline it passes into the blood where it produces positive effects on the cardiovascular system by relaxing the arteries, lowering blood pressure and reversing arterial hardening. However as this Nitric oxide is produced it is also destroyed or oxidised and therefore we need to both protect Nitric Oxide when it is produced and promote its production daily.
